I tried to watch American Idol tonight. Now, I know that I have friends that have always hated this show and find it an embarrassment to admit to watching, but for years it’s been my guilty pleasure. And on a related note, if you ever catch me in the right mood you should ask me about my experience working as a Production Assistant during the Greensboro auditions a few seasons back. But I digress.

Obviously, I was one of those people who was a big Simon Cowell fan. And when Paula left, although I agreed her behavior was getting increasingly bizarre,  I found myself cringing repeatedly through each episode everytime that Kara chick opened her mouth. So, when I heard that they were getting new judges and that one of them was J-Lo, I honestly didn’t expect much.

But I still thought I make it through longer than 20 minutes. But it was just that bad.

Surprisingly, I found that Steven Tyler was a bigger diva than J-Lo. His constant need to quip a funny joke made him a post-show hit on a Twitter. I say give it a few weeks and then tell me it’s not annoying. But the real problem I have with the show is not the individual judges, but the complete lack of someone on the panel who can actual be honest or give constructive criticism to anyone. I mean how do you expect someone to improve if you just tell them how great they are? Geez.

Additionally, Idol was my guilty pleasure because I enjoyed tuning in and seeing those diamond in the rough talents bloom and grow during the show. But this time around the show wasn’t about the kids. It was about the judges. Now maybe it’s just opening night jitters…or maybe it’s just the new kinder-gentler Idol. I don’t know. Either way, as far as me as a viewer I say put a nail in the coffin…you’re dead to me.
